Poorly Poppy and her Pyometra

Why Should I Get My Pet Neutered?

Twelve year old Poppy had a lucky escape recently.  One day her owners noticed that she wasn't as bright as usual and didn't want to eat.  They brought her in to Warbreck House and a blood test quickly revealed an increased white blood cell count.  This could indicate an infection so as Poppy had not been spayed she had an ultrasound scan to check if her womb was enlarged.  The scan showed lots of fluid in Poppy's womb so she was diagnosed with a PYOMETRA - an infection of the womb.

This was very serious as the toxins in the pus are absorbed into the bloodstream making Poppy progressively more unwell.  She was immediately taken to theatre.  She needed a drip and strong pain relief too. Because of the infection the womb was much larger than it should have been and there was a risk it could burst and cause peritonitis - an often fatal infection of the abdomen - if not removed in time.

Fortunately, thanks to Jo, Poppy's surgery went well and she felt much better within a few hours of her operation.  She has now had her stitches out and is back to her normal self.

Not everyone is lucky though, pyometra can be fatal and if Poppy had had any underlying health problems as older pets commonly do, she may not have coped so well with her anaesthetic and operation.
