Hypothyroidism is a common condition in dogs. It is caused by an under active thyroid gland, and is particularly common in Dobermans, Golden Retrievers, Poodles, Boxers and a number of other breeds. It is easy to treat and has a very good long term outlook provided treatment is continued long term.

Signs of hypothyroidism

The most common signs are lethargy, reduced exercise, weight gain, hair loss or excessive shedding and an intolerance to cold. Female dogs may become infertile.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Hypothyroidism can normally be easily diagnosed with a simple blood test. Occasionally the blood test can be inconclusive and repeat tests may be required. Treatment is via a simple once daily tablet. Response is usually very good, and dogs with the condition are expected to live completely normal lives. Once every few months, a blood test will be needed in order to confirm that the medication is working correctly.
