Dixie's Dilemma!
It was a very painful problem that befell poor Dixie one Sunday not so long ago. Thankfully his owner, Mr Powell, had gotten Dixie insured so even though he was very worried about poor Dixie he did not have the additional worry about vet bills. Mr Powell said, " The fact that Dixie was in so much pain was of great concern to me and my family. We just didn't know what was wrong as it came on so suddenly. These things tend to happen a week before pay day or just when you have other bills to pay and the fact that I knew we had a good insurance policy and I didn't have to worry about the financial side of things just made things so much easier. When the vet estimated costs for the treatment needed, which to be fair, would be a worry for anyone without the insurance, I didn't have to hesitate. It was just great to get Dixie back home happy and well! "
Poor Dixie had a right (cryptorchid) testicular torsion which basically means that his testicles had not descended into his scrotum and had twisted in his abdomen resulting in a very painful problem for poor Dixie. Obviously it was difficult to see their pet in pain and Mr Powell quickly contacted Vets Now who are the out of hours service for Warbreck House. Although Vets Now do offer advice out of hours, it is obvious when a pet must be seen as soon as possible, and the fact that he could offer his pet the best treatment without question made it easier for Mr Powell and his family.
A puppy being cryptorchid is quite common, and usually the testicle/s will come into place on their own accord. If this does not happen then it generally means more of an invasive castration procedure depending on where the testicle/s are.
It is important that you get your cryptorchid puppy castrated because if the testicles remain in the abdomen they are at a much greater risk of developing cancer.
It gives a perfect example of why pet insurance is so valuable, it makes a very difficult traumatic time a little easier; sadly we do not have the benefit of a NHS for pets. Problems can happen to very young pets as well as old pets so the sooner you get them insured the better. If you have any questions regarding insurance do please contact the surgery.
